Out Now

Last week I went down to a place and saw some friends I hadn’t seen in 25 years. We were there for a sad reason: one of my friends had just lost his life partner, his wife of many years, due to complications from a pacemaker procedure. It was such an unexpected event, and as I looked around the room at faces I hadn’t seen for far too long, I realized something. Even though the years had changed us, the eyes, the voices, and the smiles were all the same—it felt as though the years had melted away, as if no time had passed at all.

Some of us were now sporting beards—something we would never have considered back then. I was also keenly aware of those who were missing, those we had already lost. Yet, despite the sorrow, it was good to be back among old friends. I looked at my friend David, who had just lost his Linda, and I was reminded of something he once told me about his family who had lived in these hills. They remembered a time when life was harder—before the lake, before the music shows and amusement parks—when people had to work hard just to survive, to overcome obstacles, and to keep going.

David once said:
“When things get hard and you don’t know how you’re going to make it until tomorrow, remember—(there is no hill too high for us climbers).”

That saying has stayed with me ever since. I’ve used it in talks, and now I’m even using it as the title of a song. Since I’ve carried his words with me, I think it’s only fair to give him the credit—and to return a little advice of my own. In the coming days, when things get hard (and they will), and when you look around the house and everything reminds you of her, try to remember what you told me 27 years ago:

There is no hill too high - for us climbers.
